cpu usage of vmware in Linux or of something in the Hurd?

The interesting errors scrolled off the screen, though :-/
Try to boot to single user mode (-s) and run
dpkg --configure --pending
and report what's happening. If it is more than a screen full, try
dpkg --confgure hurd
or another fialing package. If it still complains about the
/var/lib/dpkg/available file, attach it to your mail.
