That is what was always happening.  I think that you do not understand
what a postincrement does:

        void* post_pointer_inc (void **p)
          void *r = *p;
          *p = *p + 1;
          return r;

now, contrast this with a preincrement:

        void* pre_point_inc (void **p)
          *p = *p + 1;
          return *p;
