I would expect such rules to change over time.  Currently, many translators
are like mounted filesystems, but when more translators follow, the
difference between filesystems, files and directories might become
smaller...  it's too early to worry about this in all detail right now,
but keep in mind there is only a single bit, translator, or not, which might
also be a symlink, or a simple file.  If you don't follow the gunzip
translator, you might archive no or the compressed file instead the readable
one, etc
