You need a math coprocessor to get it running, and it's not optimized
for speed. I suspect you won't actually be happy if you're running on
a 386. I have run it on a Pentium 133, and it was usable, though.
The Hurd buildd runs on Pentium III, and is quite happy about it.

There's a task list in the source code that has things listed there.
For a better suggestion than that, it would help to know what you
worked on in the Linux Kernel.
