Neither. When I retried it (which I didn't do directly), everything
worked fine.

What I did was nothing special: Creating a dummy automake and autoconf
in /tmp/stub/ and adding that to my $PATH, to test if Guile compiles
without calling them (as described in the Guile announcement), then I
called "./configure --prefix=". All that inside of screen.
The same thing happened to Andrew for gconf and gstreamer, IIRC.
