I had previously reported that the filesystems mounted using the
changes posted for mtab+libdiskfs --mntpath sometimes failed to mount
the file system writable, but that starting the translator actively
worked.
It turns out that the problem was the underlying owner of the node,
was non-root for the nodes which failed to start writable,
specifically the owner was a normal user, group was root.
After resetting the ownership of the underlying nodes to root.root the
activation of a passive translator correctly reports itself to mtab as
well as starts writable :-/
