My septup differs form what you would get because I modified hints/gnu.sh
to include -lpthread in libs. By default detecting threads is attemted, 
at least by config.debian.
Now I added config.gnu that configures threads as static ext and ran
config.debian --debug  which should crete perl with all fancy debugging
info next time.

disabling cores could improve stability of my system then :)

One more interesting thing:
The pipe tests fal when ran with make test but succeed with make harness.
(which is probably not related to threads at all)
