Aha! That helps a lot. Fortunately Donald Becker has covered
this chip very well. He mentions some of the issues surrounding
it on http://www.scyld.com/network/rtl8139.html. There is of
course also the 8139too effort, which I know RealTek has done
modifications to and distribute from their FTP.
My own RTL8139B was recently killed by one of my cats (murder
by electro static discharge), but I managed to find a new one
today (albeit an RTL8139D), so I'll try it out to see if I can
replicate your results.
