Robert didn't reply to say which packages are affected.  If it is just
dbootstrap, I'd say it makes more sense to fix dbootstrap.  MAKEDEV
targets are not really portable.

This seems just to require a package update.

First, the patch needs to be reviewed if only public interfaces are
changed, because -ansi compatibility is only required for them, not
for internal stuff.  Then it needs to be tested of course.

This patch is complex enough to warrant a thorough discussion of what
is changed and why.  Of couse to be able to hold such a discussion, one would 
first have to crunch the code :)

The things the patch is supposed to do are all reasonable.  I am
leaving actual implementation issues to Jeff.
