I'd suggest you start installing the Hurd-based GNU operating
system and playing with it. Depending on your skills and interests
you'll find different tasks on which you could help.

For example, if you're interested on multi-server system core dessign,
I suggest you read source code for the Hurd, Glibc, GnuMach, etc. Then
find out what needs to be fixed and submit your patches to this list.

Or if you are interested in having working applications for GNU, you
could also dedicate your time to porting the software that you miss
for that platform.
