I feel really utterly stupid, I was using a old objdump that didn't
have the needed tweak you posted (bfd groking lwpstatus_t.pr_fpreg).
I still do not know what is wrong with gdb not being able to read the
core dump, but here is the output from the objdump in either case.  As
you see, objdump now gets the offsets from the file, as it should have
done from the damn start... I haven't checked that the offsets are
correct yet, but I will do that and report back.  I also put up this
core dump at http://user.it.uu.se/~alsz8747/core.1.gz if you want to
double check it yourself.
