How often did you try to build the hello package? Did you also try
larger packages?
I remember that fakeroot was unreliable, and I see no relevant change
in the source since then. The bug report says "Reproducibility:
Intermittent". It's not new that building the hello package with
fakeroot sometimes can work (IIRC).
It's true that a better test case would be useful (even better a small
testcase which triggers the bug more often). But until then the only
info we have is that fakeroot breaks under heavy load. More debugging
is required.
