Roland, do you plan to commit this?  It seems Debian packages are
starting to more and more link with --as-needed, which apparently strips
away libpthread from NEEDED, resulting in the same behaviour as Neal
pointed out.  This patch fixes this, so it is quite important at least
for Debian.
