Many more, too. Indeed.

It's very unfortunate for developers that are not (yet ?) that intimate
with the Hurd and GNU Mach that there is nearly no one available to be
asked about e.g. design issues; things that are more tricky than fixing
simple bugs, etc.

This project's founders and current maintainers (!) have mostly
disappeared; be it due to the lack of time, interest, whatever; I don't
know.
It's a fact (and common practice) that Roland always has to be CCed as
soon as it get's to applying patches; to make sure he might eventually
respond.
I'd expect a project's current maintainers to read the associated
mailing list(s), at least the one(s) that deal with development.
Neal and Marcus are also mostly unavailable. They might be occupied
with the port to L4; I also don't know. (Hint: a status report promised
by both Neal and Marcus more than one month ago is also still missing.)

I can fully understand if people are occupied with other stuff (be it
temporarily or permanently) or are not interested anymore in maintaining
and developping the Hurd any further, but then I'd expect them to
clearly say so.

Sergio tries to address such said tricky issues, the recent posted
"Experimental patch to avoid thread explosion" is one example.
Nobody (except for Olaf giving the patch a try and reporting back on
IRC) commented on that one, the same for "New behaviour for reading from
a memory object".
Neal commented on "Multipage requests for GNU Mach 1.3", but for all of
the given examples--that are not just bug fixes to keep the thing
running--comments by the project's founders and current maintainers
would have been really helpful.

Sergio decided to go his own way and request the creation of a new
project on Savannah: Hard "Hurd's AlteRnative Development",
<URL:http://savannah.gnu.org/task/?func=detailitem&item_id=4564>.
I just found that request by accident, while browsing for other issues
on Savannah.

It's also very unfortunate that the Hurd is being forked without
discussing (or reporting, at least) that on this very mailing list.

Regards,
 Thomas
