As long as the change can't be arachieved by setting different options for thr 
translator. 

But once you created that replacement in lisp, noone else will have to do the 
work again, so the chances are high that quite quickly most of the translators 
people wish to modify will be available in lisp. 

So that rewriting can be done bit by bit when people need it. And since there 
are already example translators in lisp from the cl-lisp GSoC project, 
recreating the translators (with inspirations from the C files) should be 
quite possible.
