I did look into var log, I didn't find anything troubling.
ls /var/log

apt   btmp      dmesg    dmesg.1.gz  dpkg.log  installer.log    wtmp
boot  ConsoleKit  dmesg.0  dmesg.2.gz  fsck     lastlog

ls -l /var/run
total 24
drwxr-xr-x 2 messagebus guest   4096 2009-11-09 23:58 dbus
drwxrwx--- 2 root       root    4096 2009-11-10 01:02 hald
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root       root     335 2009-11-09 23:47 motd
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root       root       0 2009-11-09 23:47 mtab
drwxrwx--- 2 root       crontab 4096 2009-11-10 00:15 PolicyKit
drwx------ 3 root       jakub   4096 1985-01-01 00:00 sudo
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root       utmp    2688 2009-11-10 00:20 utmp

but how do i change the ownership of /var/run/hald when it is most probably
created during hal install and configuration?

(halddeamon group doesn't exist, i suppose i need to create it before the installation is started,
is that right?)

Shouldn't this be a part of the package installation? (I am just asking, cause to me it looks as
a good idea but I respect that it may not be the way things are done)

Could you check that /var/run/hald exists and belong to haldaemon?

Did you look in /var/log?
