Hi,

So, GSoC is on -- and we have several new participants. All the
candidates have written to the list before, so I hope I can skip formal
introductions -- though of course the students can introduce themselfs
if they wish :-)

We have two students this year in the GNU umbrella: Karim Allah Ahmed
will be working on improving the Mach VM, mentored by Sergio Lopez; and
Emilio Pozuelo Monfort will be systematically triaging problems exposed
by various testsuites, mentored by Carl Fredrik Hammar. Also, the Debian
organisation carries one Hurd-related project this year: Jérémie Koenig
will be working on porting the Debian Installer to the Hurd, mentored by
Samuel Thibault.

We had three other good applications this year in the GNU umbrella,
which ultimately didn't get a slot with us: one candidate went with
another organisation he had applied to first; one candidate felt uneasy
himself about time constraints, and because the project would require
quite a lot of design considerations up front -- though I guess it was
my fault for insisting on a detailed plan too much... And for one
candidate we feared the project would require a bit too much mentoring.
All these studends seemed promising though, and I'd be thrilled to see
contributions from either of them in the future :-)

So, what's next? As every year, we would like to schedule an initial IRC
meeting in the next couple of days, where we discuss generic GSoC
arrangements (including further meetings), and the first steps the
students will be taking in preparation of the projects.

For the last few months, we have had regular meeting with our former
GSoC students each Wednesday at 10:00 UTC. (This was the only slot
fitting all the regulars...) Ideally we should try to reuse this time
slot -- so I wonder, would it be possible for all the new students and
mentors to make it? Or do we need to find another slot?
