While reviewing the last 19 months worth of changes of the sourceware
master branch of glibc (should perhaps do this more regularely...), I
successively picked a few commits, put them onto my Savannah branch, and
re-ran make two or three times.  Upon the last attempt, I got a working
build!  It is some of the following:

I will not research this any further -- we now know (hope?!) that it is
no coincidence and is fixed upstream -- and will continue with advancing
our baseline, and fix all the fallout.
