Yes.

For the EPIPE/EIO/EBADFS error handling (which is essentially most of
the patch), no.  I'll rewrite that part completely, because your version
has some issues which would take too much time to go through.  At least
now I have an idea of what things need to be fixed.

The FD_SETSIZE fix, however, can easily be made separate. Any further
fix you meant by "minor tweaks will still be made" should be made
separate. One patch per change. Just like any opensource project would
require, actually...
