Hello,

I've rebuilt the installation CDs and the preinstalled qemu image.

very fine. My old PC had a Hard disk failure shortly after you fixed a serious disk bug months ago which currputed my partition/filesystems.
I thus changed HD and used your new image to install again.
I installed a fresh system, I used the text installer, also because I have little memory. Some remarks:

 * the pseudo-graphic leads to a black screen, this both with an LCD
monitor and with a CRT that normally syncs almost about anything
 * if I enable the network drivers and cfdisk, the network gets
configured but then starting of the disk partitioner seems to hang
 * By using just the disk partitioner and noething else, I was able to
complete a basic system install, which also installed grub and
   everything! 99% result!
 * rebooting the machine did hang however at the unmounting stage, I
waited 15 minutes and then turned power off

At reboot I performed an fsck -fy

I have two partitions, one for /, one for /home

Now, boot will fail however... on screen I have (retyped, I can put the screen picture ons ome hosting service if needed)

/dev/hd0s1:clean
/dev/hd0s2 is mounted
e2fsck cannot continue aborting.
Automatic boot failed... help!
#

at the prompt I could type cat /etc/fstab

/dev/hd0s1 / ext2 defaults 0 1
/dev/hd0s2 /boot ext3 defaults 0 3
/dev/hd0s3 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/hd2 /media/cdrom0 iso9660 noauto 0 0

what could be the problem? what is failing? it looks quite correct to me. Swap and CDROM shouldn't be fsck'd and they appear correct.

Someone spots a configuration error? In case it could be something done by the install procedure...

Do you need more information and/or original screendumps?

Riccardo
