As always, fsck early and fsck often.
You were right. Even if fsck wasn't being run, in recovery mode I forced a fsck and then the machine booted! I didn't do it at first, because the first boot into recovery did run fsck, so I thought that was enough.

installing the gnumach dbg right ow, one never knows!
