I recommends T60 instead. It's more modern and stable. But you need to configure SATA interface in "compatibility" mode, in the BIOS setup, to be detected as IDE.
When we will solve the SATA detection with rumpdisk in these machines, then we can recommend use it. But as moment, the most safe way is set the compatibility mode.

You could also add an SSD, which the Hurd can use, with a maximum partition size of 2TB! For now, while we stabilize the hurd-amd64 port, you should probably run a 32 bit Hurd on real hardware. You can always install the 64 bit port and let us know how it works!

I have tried booting the Debian hurd-i386 installer on my librebooted Thinkpad T400.  I used this image:

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/latest/hurd-i386/current/iso-cd/

(which is the same image as this one right?

https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/ports/stable/hurd-i386/iso-cd/  The dates are the same).

I am getting this panic message when I try to boot the installer image that you can see in the attached image.

Is there another installer image that you would like me to test on my T400 ?

I will probably reword the above paragraph to:

Want to run Debian GNU/Hurd on real hardware? We might recommend the Thinkpad T43.  You can download a working installer image here.  You can probably buy a cheap one for less than $50.  It's what I use!  Please reach out on irc when you install, because the installer image can be a little wonky.

It is possible to run a 32 bit Hurd on the Thinkpad X200, T400, T500, or W500, but installing it is a little harder (https://www.gnu.org/software/hurd/hurd/running/debian/CrossInstall.html).  If you get it installed, then you should have internet connectivity via the ethernet port.  Additionally those Thinkpads support 8GB of RAM, and you could also use an SSD, which the Hurd can use, with a maximum partition size of 2TB! I know we are all excited to use the hurd-amd64 port in real hardware, but it is not recommended yet.

Thanks,

Joshua

P.S.  I'll send the qoth in patch form before the end of the month!
