I think ftpd has a mode --deamon when it can be launch
without inetd.
Not sure about telnet/rlogind etc ...
But if you want to be more user friendly ... you
could do something like isatty(3) on the stdio and
fail with a gracefull message.... will not catch pipes 8-(
Or when the getpeername(3) fails with ENOTSOCK
spit out a message about using the --daemon or running
with inetd.
