One of the uses of VPATHish builds is to run two or more simultaneous
builds, for example where the source is on NFS and you're building on
Solaris and Linux...

This wouldn't be possible if config.h is dumped into the source

Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Had strange things happen?  Are you going round the twist?
