Can't the changes from 0.15.0 to 0.16.2 that broke the CXX check just be
reverted? I'm probably thinking too simplisticly.

Will 2.0 be fully backwards compatible with packages that are designed
for the older libtools (0.15, 0.16, 0.17)?
