This faulty entry actually arises from a distribution packaging error. The
Debian/Ubuntu build system for glib2.0 compiled the software twice, with and
without `--enable-static. It installed *.a files from the shared/static build,
yet took *.la files from the shared-only build. Debian fixed the problem this
January; see http://bugs.debian.org/297741.
It is my understanding that Ubuntu will merge updates from Debian packages
periodically. Thus, the problem is on track to be fixed in Ubuntu as well. In
the mean time, your manual edits to the files are sufficient.
