Or, even better, please try with M4 1.4.10b (since I want the next stable 
release of M4 to avoid the brown bag that was 1.4.10).  Plus, M4 1.4.10b is 
_much_ faster.

And in the meantime, I have gained login access to a BSD machine, so I 
hopefully won't be making any more M4 releases that pass on Linux, cygwin, 
Solaris, and mingw, but fail on BSD and darwin.
