They are providing

A) A migration path across versions

B) Warning messages for deprecated features, softly coaxing people to
update their API usage.

We are being jerks here.  By supporting 1.4, 1.5/1.6 and 1.7, we are
spanning three generations of GUILE.

Don't get me started on GUILE the development/release management,
though.
