I have become very suspicious of input changes designed to lessen
typing work. They're a lot of work to implement, usually have unclean
semantics, and are hard to read for other people. What's so special
about this that cannot be accomplished with a emacs keybinding/function?

I must confess that I do like the proposal that Rune submitted some
time ago (repeating the last `simple' element with a letter, eg. the
x), but the same reasoning applies.

No. Macro's can be done with CPP or M4.
