I know that I have written this before - but as 1.8 is on its way I think that somebody (with more makefile experience than me) should look into this - now. On RH7.3 the makescript fails to locate python2. It even fails to fail about missing python. It just goes on (using python1.5) and fails with an error when running ly2dvi with the wrong python. exporting PYTHON=/usr/bin/python2 before running configure solves the problem, but it really should not be necessary.
The bug was not there in 1.6 because 1.6 was python1.5 compatible :-)
