I suspected that would be the answer.  In that case this is a bug  
report WRT documentation.

       Typeset music and or play MIDI from FILE
...

Having read the online documentation I wasn't under the impression that  
lilypond would play midi until I saw the above bit on the man page.   
And the man page is pretty well unambiguous about playing midi.
