There are two common conventions for vocal music:
      One common convention is that a beam indicates a group of notes
to be sung to the same syllable.
      Another is that the music is beamed normally, and slur marks are
      used to indicate notes to be sung to the same syllable.

I don't know what the intent of the Lilypond authors was, but this
bevaviour therefore works quite well for common cases.
