To avoid collision? I think the staff below the one with the G_8 will never
be so close to collide with the 8. IMHO the spacing between staves in normal
cases should also be independent of the 8. (And as I can see it is equal now
between all staves.)

Usually the tenor part of 4-part choirs is written with this clef. (I think
it is the most frequent use of this clef.)
But there are some instruments (e.g. guitar, recorder, bass) that are
(sometimes) written with ottava clef.
