Ah.. I ruled this out, since I believed that I had tried this with lilypond 
2.2.1. But after testing with 2.2.1, I can see that the same bug occurs 
there.

The problem is not that gs doesn't support the device "bbox"; it does (at 
least it lists it among the supported devices when I do gs -h). The problem 
is that
gs -sDEVICE=bbox
gives a segmentation fault.
(gs-gpl 8.01, 2004-01-30, debian testing)

gs-apfl (8.14) gives another error msg, I have submitted a bug report.
