Actually, you also get a warning from LilyPond saying:
programming error: Improbable system height.

This could be reformulated into something like:
"You have extremely high/low notes in your score
(maybe because of wrong use of \relative mode)"

(Maybe too sloppy to be used as a formal error message, but the
intention is right.)
The user documentation of some software/hardware includes a list
of all error messages together with an explanation and advanced
guess about what caused it. Maybe this is something to do also
for LilyPond.

Matthew, I'm not sure if you understood Jan's answer. The problem
is that you added the line \relative c' to an example written
in absolute pitch (by Rosegarden).

You are using an awful lot of octave quotes for relative mode. Better try
this without \relative.

Perhaps this is a relevant bug report: The error message was not very helpful unless you have experience of this kind of errors. Perhaps there should be a hint in the message, about this probable cause?

The current warning implies that the cause is some kind of bug ('programming error'), followed by some abstract TeX error msg, which doesn't look too good for a user mistake.
