The question is why the Cygwin installation in XP works excellently
for me, using the latest teTeX packages and lilypond 2.4.3-1?

However, on Linux machine where I had compiled LilyPond myself,
I noticed that it didn't work when I had compiled against
the kpathsea from an old teTeX version 1.07 or so, and then
tried to run it with teTeX 3.0. The problem was probably that
the default paths in kpathsea didn't match the directory structure
of the teTeX 3.0 installation (this could be an issue in LilyPond
since the $SELFAUTOPARENT used in texmf.cnf doesn't work since
the LilyPond binary is placed elsewhere. Ignore this comment if
you are not an expert in the inner workings of teTeX). However,
it might also be that the configuration file of teTeX 3.0 uses
some feature in kpathsea that wasn't included in my old version.
