If you take a look into the file ly/spanners-init.ly, where these commands
are defined, you will find a comment that supports your final guess! :-)

Hi folks,
The following .ly file produces two problems, one trivial and another
not s trivial. (The trivial problem is that I'm running version 2.7.13
but the file insists on a version number of 2.7.12.)
Here's the file:
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
\version "2.7.12" % Actually 2.7.13
\score{
\relative c'{
d4.\cresc c8 d4 e | e1\f
}
}
%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%
This is a minimal case cut-and-paste from a real life score I'm working
on. I've attached the resulting pdf.
You'll notice that the cresc. marking is attached to the c8 and not the d4..
The cresc. mark is placed in the right place if I use \setTextCresc and
\<. I've also noticed that the manual doesn't seem to have the command
\cresc in Section 6.5.3. Is it's use deprecated, and does my bug belong
to a bygone era?
