Hi, after viewing some printed scores, I now understand why. Normally, music notes higher than the middle line of a staff have downward stems. However, in polyphony, the upper voice has upward stems. I think the reason the stem lengths are shorter is to prevent clashes or overlaps with noteheads or other expression marks on the staff above. Is this assumption correct?
