Maybe the \char feature has been removed (pity) and the bug is that the
manual has a residual. Section 8.1.6 of the 2.8.5 manual states:
\char num (integer)
Produce a single character, e.g. \char #65 produces the letter 'A'.

Yes but... it's LilyPond. I mean, I thought it was an LSR bug, but it's
simply that LilyPond won't compile that file... there's nothing I can do
about it.
