Problem with \char #65 ???

    Hi,
   
  how does
   
  \char #integer
   
  work? (See chapter 8.1.6 of the LilyPond Guide.) Whenever I use something like
   
  copyright = \markup { \char #169 }
   
  or
   
  copyright = \markup \char #169
   
  the corresponding *.ly file does not compile, although the logfile does not 
indicate any syntax error (or any error at all).
   
  So, how does \char #integer work? Does is work at all?
   
  Thus, please check, whether this is a bug.
