If you want to attach a markup to a multi-measure rest, why not simply use
R2.^\markup{ "Fà ch'ogn'uno tralasci e balli canti"}
which has been supported since version 2.4. Then, the text will not stretch
the measure. If you want the text left aligned instead of the default
centered
alignment, you can do:
\override MultiMeasureRestText #'self-alignment-X = #LEFT
