   after failing to recreate my problem in a small sample I returned to the
   original piece .
   maybe my eps jazz articulations were getting things in a muddle?
   the only change I made was to add:
   lilypond -I path/to/eps-files  file.ly
   problem solved!
   my humble apologies to anyone who put time into this.
