OK, workaround will work now due to the presence of \override NoteColumn
#'ignore-colision = ##t. Prior to addition of this NoteColumn attribute, 
invisible
notes (or rests) did not make acceptable replacements for skips due to numerous
warnings at render time.

On a sidenote, I think the use of invisible notes (or rests) in place of skips 
makes
input code less semantic. Perhaps there can be a setting to NoteColumn or 
PaperColumn
that makes lily perceive next event (even if a skip) as nearest neighbor for 
purposes
of floating-column positioning.
