Indeed, GUB solves the problem. I'm guessing it's not a GUILE issue; I
reverted my local GUILE to 1.8.2 (GUB's version) and still got the "cruelty
to springs" error.
Just out of curiosity, what config options are used when building GUILE for
GUB?
