I think this is totally deprecated.
First of all, the \gliss syntax mentioned in the comment is no longer correct.
Second, the whole sentence is no longer relevant, as unlike what's
specified, the << { s8 s8 s4 } { c4 \glissando d4 } >> works out of
the box as expected.

This is a third obsolete element here, the \stemUp command is no longer needed.

I would remove all three deprecated things here, but it is not really my call.
