there is no concept of 'aligning' to: lily uses a combinatorial 
approach: generate a
lot of different combinations of formatting, and select the one that is 
least ugly.
See tie-formatting-problem.cc for the code involved.   The general 
assumption is that
there are a set of ties which can be vertically ordered (so no 2 ties 
can occupy the
same position).  I don't see how you could integrate your problem in 
that framework.
