Colliding parenthesis: bug or feature?

In the code:
<\parenthesize dod'''? la'>4

2 parenthesis, one opening one closing, are at the same location in the pdf
file: bug of feature?

i tried with many situations, the "\parenthesize" always collides with the
"d?" "b?" "bb?" or "dd?".

BTW, the fact that in the 2 sets of parenthesis, one is much bigger than the
other, looks ugly for me.
