It would be nice to have a tweakable option to control whether alternate  
repeats are counted as
          |--|---
 1 2 3 4 :|| 4     5 6 7
or
          |--|---
 1 2 3 4 :|| 5     6 7 8


Plenty of discussion (including some references which indicate that both  
methods are used)
