I like to give new contributors a few weeks to learn the ropes
before doing anything like chastising them.

/me smacks his head

You don't need to understand anything. The example is short. It
claims that it should print a note. Generate output. Is there a
final c? If no, dump it in the tracker. If yes, ask him for more
details about his OS or lilypond version or whatever.

All you need to "understand" is "where should the dot indicating a
C appear on a treble staff". If you're trying to understand
anything more than that, then you're not being an efficient bug
meister.

Yes, I'd also like you to deal with those older reports. That's
why I asked "James?" and added the line about you having other
tasks.
