2.10.33 is quite old. I don't have anything near around for testing; it does not look like that much of a change, but I strongly suggest that you switch to 2.12.something - this may already help, if it's a bug fixed since then.

I have other crescendos and diminuendos in the piece.

No problem here, only using your input in a single-staff score, with 2.13.7.
One thing that comes into my mind: (at least) if you have MIDI output, you need to specify a "start loudness" - like \f, \p or somewhat - before the first hairpin dynamic (\> or \<). Anyway, this should not cause a segfault, but at least there's a chance it helps. Otherwise, I guess we need at least a "full working minimal example" of the bug; still, chances are that everything looks better on 2.12 or 2.13.
